Know the Difference Between Coaching and Mentoring
Coaching and mentoring are terms that are frequently used interchangeably as both help individuals grow, advance their knowledge, and develop personally and professionally. However, there is some overlap between the two roles. In today's post, let us explore these differences between both professions.
To start with, let us first consider the definition of both terms and know who is a coach and a mentor.
What Is Coaching?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the coaching career and coaches worldwide, defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
A coach is an individual who supports and assists clients by partnering with them in identifying their goals, overcoming limiting beliefs, developing new insights, and reaching their full potential.

What Is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a relationship where the mentor imparts their personal experience, skills, knowledge, and advice to the mentee who has less experience in a role the mentor has already been in the past and helps them grow.
A mentor is an individual who has already succeeded in the mentee's current role and assists them in improving their skills based on the experiences and knowledge gained in the past.
The Differences Between Coaching and Mentoring
Coaching is a process that involves asking questions, actively listening, and providing feed-forward to assist individuals in discovering what is holding them back and developing new perspectives around their current situation, allowing them to reach their full potential.
Mentoring is an advisory process that involves sharing knowledge, experience, insight, or wisdom from one person to another. Mentors share their expertise with those who want to learn more about their professions or industries over time.
Throughout the mentoring process, the mentee asks questions to the mentor to be able to tap into their experience and gain knowledge on how to act in a given situation similar to one that the mentor has faced in the past.
Coaching is a solution-focused and performance-driven process where the coach not only assists the client in overcoming challenges but looking beyond and supports them in identifying their true self and gaining confidence.
Mentoring is a direct and development-driven approach designed to assist individuals in improving their performance or skill in a specific field or area of expertise, like the mentor.
Coaches often lack experience in the industry or role in which their clients work. They apply their coaching skills across the coaching session and assist the clients in gaining deeper insight and evoke new awareness around their challenges, allowing them to look at it from a different perspective.
In mentoring, mentors do not require any special training. They can take up the role by having an experience of a certain amount of years in a specific position or industry and pass on the knowledge and advice to the mentee regarding it.

While both coaching and mentoring are essential, the main difference between them comes down to the developmental level of the individual being mentored or coached. Supportive, ongoing relationships with mentors can help people reach their potential by gaining knowledge from the mentor's experience, but a good coach actively assists and supports individuals in changing their lives by getting them to figure out solutions on their own and deal with challenging situations confidently.
